At one point the Big Ten actually did have 10 teams, but heading into this season the marquee conference will have a dozen schools vying for berths in its newly-created championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Penn State Nittany Lions gave the Big Ten 11 teams back in 1990, and with Nebraska Cornhuskers in the fold for this season the conference is up to 12 schools – and they're now able to hold a Big Ten Championship Game.
And newly-admitted Nebraska sits atop the college football odds at the Bodog Sportsbook to win that title game in December, with a line of 8/5. The Cornhuskers went 10-4 last season and 6-2 in Big 12 action, going on to lose the Holiday Bowl by a score of 19-7 to Washington.
Wisconsin Badgers is next at 13/5 to win the Big Ten this season, with Ohio State Buckeyes at 5/1 on those college football futures odds. Those two schools represented the Big Ten in the BCS last year, with Wisconsin falling 21-19 to TCU Horned Frogs in the Rose Bowl, and Ohio State winning 31-26 against Arkansas Razorbacks in the Sugar Bowl.
Penn State is then at 11/2 to win the Big Ten, with Michigan State Spartans at 10/1, Michigan Wolverines at 15/1, and Iowa Hawkeyes at 17/1. Northwestern Wildcats (22/1) and Illinois Fighting Illini (25/1) represent the middle tier of contenders for the conference title, with Purdue Boilermakers (85/1), Indiana Hoosiers (125/1) and Minnesota Golden Gophers (125/1) the longshots on those college football odds.
As well, with 12 teams in the fold the Big Ten has now been split into two divisions – with unpopular names 'Leaders' and 'Legends'.
Wisconsin is the favorite to win the Leaders Division at the Bodog Sportsbook at 7/5, followed by Ohio State (2/1), Penn State (43/20), Illinois (10/1), Purdue (33/1), and Indiana (40/1).
Nebraska is then the chalk in the Legends Division at 1/2, followed by Michigan State (4/1), Michigan (11/2), Iowa (7/1), Northwestern (9/1), and Minnesota (50/1).
As for the overall BCS National Championship, Wisconsin is the top Big Ten team on that college football betting board at the Bodog Sportsbook at 20/1, with Nebraska and Ohio State both at 25/1.
Penn State (30/1), Michigan State (50/1), Iowa State (65/1), and Michigan State (75/1) are the other listed teams on the BCS National Championship list from the conference heading into the season.
